10:57 am - My very first Baitcon
was absolutely marvelous.  I had a wonderful time just hanging out for the weekend.  As someone who helps organize a similar event elsewhere, I was tremendously impressed with the amenities of the campsite and the organizational abilities of the folks running this lovely event.  Many kudos to everyone who made this weekend work, it was a very good thing for me to relax with many kind folk that I never seem to get caught up with in real life.

And I think I've convinced [info]sebastian_tombs to join us next year as well.  Just need to find a better dogsitting situation.

Thanks JB and Kimberly for letting me into this wonderful event!!!  Many joyous wishes upon your house!

9:55 pm - sad hot tub news
My joy over the repaired hot tub was too soon - I filled it and started it up today , everything was fine, so we went out.  Came home to an empty tub and a whining motor

sigh.

current mood: disappointed

7:45 pm - My hot tub is repaired!!!
These folks were supposed to come last week, no phone call, nothing.  Today I come home and notice my windchime has been moved - aha - they came!

And better yet, the huge estimate they gave me turned into a bill less than 1/3rd that awful amount I gritted my teeth over!!

W00t!!

10:55 pm - Travelogue on the way home
More boring trip notes for next year.  Home is always longer, especially as a solo driver.
Left Raccoon Creek State Park 12:01pm 77 degrees, took Rt 18 to Anderson-Hozak Rd to 30 East to Rt 60 North - new route, worked well.  Many thanks to the cop that didn't pull me over, but did slow me down enough to miss the deer over the next hill!
1:12pm Rt 80 East, 83 degrees
1:25pm detour to Prime Outlets down Rt 79 one exit, to pick up bras at Vanity Fair (ridiculous, but where else can I find bras my size for $5 each?)
2:40pm back on Rt 80, headed east forever, gas $3.99/gal
7:34pm NJ, gas $3.93  Shell, still on RT 80, heading for 287
8:55pm NY, to find an hour back up from the Tappan Zee bridge to exit 14 with no alternate route (groan)
10pm CT via 95 N
12am RI
12:50am MA 95 to 93N
2am NH
2:15am home and bed soon thereafter

723 miles

10:11 pm - Fortfest 2008
I really need to get a dragon or firelizard icon for these in the future, if anyone has any pointers.  So, it was a Fortfest, I had a wonderful weekend and I hope everyone else did too!  Multiple details hidden behind the cut for those of you who have no idea what I'm blathering on about ;-)

9:00 am - Odd historical fact ala Harry Potter
So, I'm reading "The Sion Revelation" - not bad, especially if you are a history buff, when I come across the following passage (paraphrased):

"Blanche d'Evreux (wife of Philippe VI of France) is said to be the patron of alchemist Nicolas Flamel, who was also on the list of past Grand Masters."

I thought JK Rowling made him up!! I certainly never learned about him in my history classes LOL

9:52 pm - Fortfest begins!
Well, at least for me and the other folks that get  things started before the hordes descend.  For those that are heading this way tomorrow -

-the camp site has been upgraded yet again, we have beautiful new tile floors in the kitchen
-as has been the trend, it gets easier to clean every year (I really think we've challenged them) - only took 2 hours this year, though we still have one more refrigerator to finish tomorrow
-we've sprayed for wasps in advance, you should only find dead ones in the cabins
-due to an overdose of wasp spray (we think) H'yu claims to have seen a bear in one of the 30 series cabins, sprayed it in the nose with wasp spray and it left post haste.  Please let us know if you see any bears...
-it was decidedly warm at the campsite today (in excess of 80 degrees), please remember to hydrate accordingly over the weekend

Tomorrow morning will be your last chance to email me with any comments, as I will be onsite until late tomorrow night.

It will be helpful if folks have dish towels to donate.

9:43 pm - Fortfest Travel Log
For my own info on future drives to Pittsburgh (why did it take me over a decade to do this?):

Left NH 9:45am 76 degrees, gas $3.89/gal, 93 South
10:05am entered MA, 81 degrees 93 South to 95 South
11:05am entered RI 85 degrees, gas $3.99/gal
12:05am entered CT 88 degrees, too much construction traffic (groan) but better than 84 would have been
2:29pm entered NY 88 degrees, minimal traffic at reasonable speeds, 95 South to 287 West (sort of)
2:58pm entered NJ 86 degrees, 287 to 80 West, why was traffic delayed at 15mph for the next 20 miles? I may never know
5:01pm entered PA, PA ranged from 79-86 degrees until sunset, $3.99/gal at the cheap places
10pm hit Rt 79 South
11:15pm arrived at my destination
13.5 hours
712 miles

Plates seen along the way (other than the 7 states I was traveling in): TX, MI, VA, MD, SC

8:39 pm - Recent license plates
I've been such a slug about posting that I actually have a list.  At some point this week maybe I'll get the 6 posts in my head actually out onto the keyboard.

This one shocked me entirely when I came around the corner, wish I had a camera at the time:
FG BUG - rainbow colored VW NY
MY PART -  Prius, of course, NH
HOGLVR - SUV in NH, I took this for the pig, [info]sebastian_tombs pointed out it probably referred to the motorcycle...
CEEEYA - MA
K9MOM - NH
DODLBG - ME VW in bright yellow

There is a fancy convertible in MA that managed to get 1

I saw a beautiful white Porsche on a trailer - OBSESHN

On a rather Spyder like Pontiac convertible - SPFZRO

More posts later this week, heck I haven't logged England yet [sigh]

5:37 pm - Survival of the Sickest by Dr. Sharon Moalem
This is a fascinating look at the evolution of disease in humans, genetics, and how our bodies interact with the world around us.  I found it absolutely wonderful as a read (though admitted, I am a medical geek) and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in genetics or evolution.

You are welcome to borrow my copy, but [info]sweetmmeblue asked first.

What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish.

Here's the twist: add (*) beside the ones you liked and would (or did) read again or recommend. Even if you read 'em for school in the first place.

Note: I"ve added comments as well

9:56 pm - Just a quick post of the day
Thanks to everyone who sent me lovely birthday wishes in all forms of communication (LJ, email, phone, hugs, etc).  The hospital I finished at today bought me lunch and cake and we had a good day with lots of puppies.  I had my birthday dinner with my parents (Irish stew!) and Mom invited my sisters and their kids over for dinner and cake.  Then I came back to lots of email and LJ goodies.

  You are all awesome!
